fall favorites

12 Oct

When you move to New York people love to ask you things like, “what’s your favorite restaurant?” “what’s your favorite borough?!” and I always thought uh, are you serious people? Did ever try to just search for a restaurant in NYC and choose one? Impossible. (and If you dare choose a borough the rest will turn on you.) Until I went to a restaurant that offers you loads and loads of fresh vegetables on a platter. :o

Enter: Westville.

Thus far my favorite meal in NYC.

Every day the market sides change based on ingredients so you are handed a photocopied handwritten paper or can check the chalk board. Today’s list for the East Westville:

Let me tell you something: If I’m not eating pesto mashed potatoes, I’m thinking about them. If I’m not thinking about pesto mashed potatoes, I’m asleep. It’s rare for a vegetarian to find an appropriate time for mashed potatoes. They are a typical side for steak and turkey, but salad with a side of mashed potatoes? Not-so-much. Now I love any excuse to get them. My plate from today:

Pesto mashed potatoes (duh), brussel sprouts, kale, and butternut squash. Trust me. It’s not easy to choose only four, but you have to. You can say “next time” to the rest and that’s how they keep you coming back. BTW, there’s a couple locations. I’ve only been to the East and West thus far. And I love the West – the East has better light for pictures. ;) This is actually the first time I’ve been to the East and thus the first time I got a useable picture!

And in other news…

Danny and I rode bikes through all of Central Park on Sunday. 110 blocks via bike? Done and done. Now I wish I had a bike (we rented for an hour – only $7 if you reserve ahead of time and go with the place outside of CP) and lived near CP so it could be my new favorite thing to do, too.

Also, my new hair!

Please don’t mind the jersey I’m wearing by rubbing anything in further. Don’t even mention the baseball team with “ill” in the name or I’ll have to tear up. Again. If you do want to talk about my new Tom’s I’ll be happy to tell you how comfortable they are, though!

Speaking of fall favorites… There’s a favorite J & I share from home I’ll be sharing soon! I may have had a few too many the past few days… oops.

PS, forgot to mention Westville is very generous with the wine, also. ;)

what jamie ate wednesday

31 Aug

Woohoo! Wednesday is just about over- I am so happy to be one step closer to the three day weekend! I have some plans that I am seriously excited about. Writing this WIAW is a bit sad for me..as the last time I posted a WIAW I was busy staring at Justin Timberlake’s butt in the same day. Sigh. Today was rather normal, starting with breakfast.

most important meal of the day!

Uncle Sam’s cereal with chocolate almond milk and PB. Seriously..this tasted like cocoa krispies!

desktop salad

I had to make a quick run to the grocery store before work and decided I could splurge on a Harris Teeter salad bar lunch. Grilled chicken, eggs, cottage cheese..can you tell I’m amping up the protein here?

And with lunch… some white chocolate chips. I needed my sweet fix!

curbing cravings

I’ve made 2pm my designated snack time, I’m usually starving by then. (I eat lunch at 11am..grandma status.)

chicken of the sea

Tuna mixed with Smart Beat mayo (I’m telling you- SO good) + spicy brown mustard.

Post work I hit up the gym to complete 10 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill and 20 minutes of ellipticalling to the Kardashians. Nothing too intense- just wanted to get my butt moving on some cardio since I’ve been focusing more on weights lately!

Dinner was a lazy one- whole wheat pasta with chicken sausage and jarred (DON’T TELL MY MOM) sauce with spinach. I’m a bad, bad Italian girl today. The shame.

faux italiano

Right now I’m sippin’ on some water but let’s be real here, I’m sure I’ll have a glass of wine soon. I told myself I’d cut back on my week time wine consumption but Danny brought a giant bottle home for me post work Monday…that boy. Cheers!

28 Jul

Hey y’all! Thanks so much for your comments on my post about quitting the calorie counting : my goal that I have already put into motion! It’s going to be HARD. This is my third day without counting and although I feel okay, I now find myself thinking in rigid terms like: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. Although I start to eat each when I feel hungry, it still seems like some sort of “plan”, but I guess it’s a START. (And at least I’m free of the counting!)

Last night Danny, my brother (who is in town visiting) and I went to visit my cousin Scott and his wife Joanne. Danny and I lived with Scott and Joanne for about eight months before moving into our current home (okay, so Danny lived with them and I totally moved in and crashed the place) so it was REALLY exciting to go and see them + their PUPS!

I think I have posted about Cruiser before- he is the first second love of my life, a giant French Mastiff.

the only boy who looks better with wrinkles

Last night he was PUMPED to see Danny, and probably even more excited to see me, his favorite former roommate. (I gave WAY too many treats…sorry Joanne.)

higher than jordan!

And I got to see their pup Mickey, who is equally as cute yet for some reason he makes me so nervous that it looks as if I have to pee. Whoops!

one day we'll be friends

P.S. Did you notice my first week early birthday present from Danny?

bling bling sistah

Anyway- since my bro is here I wanted to prove to him that I actually do cook (only so he can run home and tell my mom that I’m almost HALF as good as her, which is really a compliment still..) I decided to dabble with some shrimp and make Christina’s recipe: The Christina Orzo Shrimp and Feta Bake. The only change I made?

try this, now!

Out with the orzo and in with the Orecchiette, because it sounds way more like MY last name instead.

fresh veggies and white wine sauce

I also added a ridiculous amount of extra pasta and feta cheese: got some boys to feed here!

woops!

I’m about to pop it in the oven in another ten minutes so it’s done as soon as D$ gets home- serious girlfriend points, gotta butter him up before my birthday! If this is not one of the best recipes I’ve tried out in awhile, I will be shocked. It already smells SO GOOD.

Oh P.S. Follow me and Courtie on twitter! :D
