one year

8 Nov

Yesterday marks a very special anniversary of mine – one year and one day ago, I made the move to New York City to live with a [then] stranger and start an entirely new career. Woah.

uh, yeah, I live here.

I actually moved in the day of the NYC Marathon last year, so it meant a lot to me to watch it this year. Although a spectator’s version of the NYCM is not quite as exciting as say, someone who was running it, I have to say – the energy in New York on the day of the race was electric. The energy in NYC always feels electric, but on Sunday it was a positive happy electricity. Everyone was rooting for one another and no one was giving dirty looks because someone stole the other person’s spot on the subway.

We usually keep to ourselves in the city, unless it’s to call someone out on stepping on your shoe or bumping into you with an umbrella, but on race day there was no holding back for shouting stranger’s names and cheering them on.

I’m sad to say I didn’t get to see anyone I knew! I’m easily distracted and nearly blind but was super disappointed not to at least see Susan zooming by! Congrats to all, though!

In terms of my one year relationship with New York, I decided to start a bucket list. Not that I plan on leaving any time soon; but it’s really hard not to get caught up with your every day problems and forget how amazing it is to be in your 20’s and living in the greatest city in the world. Whenever a bad day gets me down, I just look up and remind myself “Wow; I’m living a life in a city some people only get to dream about and watch on their tv’s. I am so lucky.” Of course in the movies, the work day is a montage and not nearly as long so reiterating the I am so lucky in your head is really important. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to lie or fake it – I’m totally not some chipper girl all the time: sometimes the subway makes me feel like I’m going to vomit, and/or I get so angry my ears get hot, but the least you can do appreciate the city you live in on occasion before the novelty wears off. čśë

Central Park čÖé

So here’s my little baby! It’s a growing list so I’d love suggestions and of course new friends to check off items along the way. čÖé

Side note: I like to add some things I’ve already done even though of course it’s missing a big chunk. I had a life crisis after watching The Buried Life on MTV, but then I made a mental list of all the cool things I’ve done in life and I felt a lot better because while there was a ton of interesting things I haven’t done, there’s a heck of a lot I have that I was totally missing.

…. like eating at PB&co with Jamie. (Sure you don’t want to visit again, J? ;)) Along with the Highline, fireworks on a rooftop, the boats in Central Park, & Eataly just to name a few.

xoxo, courtney

where in the world

13 Sep

…have we been? We know, we know. čśŽ Life has been kicking our booties lately. We have both been working way too hard.

if only we were co-workers...

And partying or gyming even harder.

In between all that – somehow getting in some serious resting in, too. čśë

this is a rest day... right?

Add in respective sicknesses, second jobs, natural disasters, apartment hunting, football season, lost phones, and things have been straight up cray cray. (<— btw, this is my new favorite phrase. I promise the phase will end soon. Maybe.)

(side note: read our rules if you’re confused on the bunny ears.)

I think we’ve all been there! Some days you get home from a long day (or your long day WAS at home if you are J) and the last thing you want to do is look at a computer. We appreciate your understanding while we gather our marbles. I think the last few might be hiding from us.. čśë (Read as: #1 on this Seven Things A Twentysomething Can Do article. It’s hilarious.)

In other news, I was ecstatic to finally get to enjoy Fashion’s Night Out actually in New York City this year! It was a dream come true. čśÇ (Even though I didn’t see a single celebrity, not even Pauly D. Sigh.)

I’ll take free alcohol and goodie bags every day, please. I think that might help my marble count. What do you think?!

BFF: our differences

2 Sep

While we often times emphasize how similar we are, Jamie and I actually *DO* have some differences. GASP! :O That’s why we wanted to do a Best Friends Friday where we talk about some of the things that make each of us our own person. Catch up on our rules, or what BFF actually is here.

1. Jamie’s Dance Moves > Courtney’s Dance Moves.

Jamie could probably be a back-up dancer for Lil Wayne, and I on the other hand am very “white girl can’t dance.” My body sometimes feels like a Barbie when it tries to bend.. it just doesn’t move that way. Jamie tries to coach me along, but in her absence my skills are seriously┬álacking.

2. Jamie is a super romantic mushy-gushy┬áCharlotte┬átype. I am a practical, show less-feelings kind of gal. (Maybe more of a mix of Carrie and┬áSamantha┬á– without the┬áraunchiness, and definitely skipping the lesbian episodes. :))

mush

This is a good balance to have in friendship. I can bring Jamie back to reality, and Jamie can tell me when I’m not being mushy enough. Trust me, there’s times.

all about balance

3. In the theme of #2, this stems many (sometimes wine induced) proclamations of love on Facebook.

I, on the other hand, don’t think I have ever made one of these mushy statuses. I like to keep things more serious.

(A reference to my apartment woes..)

4. The herbivore (Courtney) and the carnivore (Jamie)

Anyone who lets eating habits get in the way of friendship is silly. We both respect each other’s choices and would never try to persuade the other to the dark side, or the light side.. čśë Jamie actually willingly decided to try out vegetarianism a couple years ago and it just didn’t work out for her. Only we know what’s right for our bodies and as Gina says, “different strokes for different folks.”

5. I need hugging lessons. I dance like a barbie and hug like one too. Jamie will pull anyone into a giant embrace and usually has her arm around Danny at all times. I am more about personal space over here… I’m working on it. čśë

BFF: Dynamite Rules

19 Aug

Happy BFF! It’s Best Friends Friday over here! This week we’d like to enlighten you with our rules of life. We swore on the cover of Mean Girls that these are the laws we will would live by, forever and always. (Just kidding…we are not that creepy, nor do we actually follow rules or initiate girls who want to be our friends.)

DYNAMITE RULES

1. Wine goes well with dinner. It also goes well with late night TV watching, hair braiding, and facebook stalking. Drink it if you agree. Do not be ashamed by the accidental “likes” and overzealous comments you leave on blogs and status updates. “I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THAT PROTEIN POWDER!!!!! It’s SOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOD!” If you’ve found comments like this from us (mostly Jamie) anywhere in your life, be aware that we normally do not shout out our love for protein in real life. Pinot sets typing skills on fire.

cheers!

2. Try hard not to spend money. Talk constantly about how your mint.com account hates you, complain about paying rent every month, and insist that you are not allowed to spend on wants- NEEDS ONLY. Then rationalize. “What is the difference between a want and a need anyway? Clothes are wants, but if if I don’t have a new dress for [insert meaningless fun event here] then I will look horrible therefore I will have a terrible time and it will be bad for my metal health.” Move clothes from want to need. Buy just one outfit. Cheap. Kiss the gods of Forever 21.

we can't even wear these. these are MENS SHIRTS. i don't remember what we were doing here.

3. On Wednesdays, we wear pink. When we realize we own nothing pink- we improvise.

is beer a carb?

4. Complain to your best friend. Best friends are there for that sole purpose, to listen to you ramble on about something absolutely ridiculous while you simultaneously ramble on about how ridiculous your rambles are. A true best friend will let you go on and on, and save your boyfriend/mom/roommate/coworkers from finding out just how nuts you actually are.

the joke is on you dmoney!

5. Change your hair, and change it often. If you have had the same part, color, cut, or style for over one month be sure to make a switch up soon. You should be completely unrecognizable to your family when you make it back to Jersey for a visit. After you change your hair- complain (to your best friend- see rule #4) about how you should have never changed your style in the first place, now it’s too short, too dark, too not-the-way-it-was-before.

6. Only fall in love with men named Danny. We’d map it out for you, but we’ve done that before.

7. Keep in contact with your best friend daily. There are about 239084 thousand means of communication these days, use them all. Text her while she tweets you. Leave her 230 comments on her facebook telling her how pretty and perfect she is. It’s kind of like getting a compliment from your mom, but it’s nice and you’ve gotta have each others backs.

i got you!

8. Be silly and have fun. Don’t take anything too seriously, don’t take yourself too seriously. Work hard, play hard. It’s all in good fun. Don’t sweat the small stuff- only sweat in the gym. Or on the beach. Or when Justin Timberlake is three feet away from you. (Okay. Last time on the JT reference. Solemnly swear.)

never too serious for bathroom pics.

9. We’re done, but aren’t rules always better in tens?

10. Follow our rules with caution. We aren’t experts on the matter, these just work for us.

update on kickin’ those habits

9 Aug

HEY Y’ALL. Guess who’s flight was supposed to leave tonight but got canceled so I get to see her face for possibly two more nights?!

THIS GIRL!

Courtney is back in my arms and I’m never letting go. Just kidding..but Alyss maybe y’all can meet now?..

I’ve been having a BLAST with my best friend. Seriously. So much of a blast that I’ve totally forgotten about Freely Be’s Kick The Habit.. where I’ve promised myself to finally quit counting calories once and for all. By forgotten… I mean I’ve QUIT without stress.

Now, I’m not sure if the excitement of my 24th birthday, Court’s visit, and a raise at my job (WHAT) have taken over my brain allowing it to no longer be temporarily consumed by calorie counting.. but honestly. I am a beast at quitting this- mainly because it is SO EASY to just eat and not add. I’m a writer, hello! Numbers were never my deal anyway.

ALSO- quitting has led me to consuming WAY healthier foods. I don’t add a brownie up for a nice lunch total and call it a meal. I eat quinoa, tomatoes, and goat cheese for lunch. Then I’m full, and I’ve forgotten about food until my stomach strikes again.

life is just more fun this way..

Once again- it’s ONLY been two weeks. (I started a week before the first.)┬á I know that things can change, but as of now I’m happy and I like this life. In addition to quitting calorie counting I’ve decided to do a double whammy and combat my fear of lifting weights.

So until August 31st.. no counting, and bringin’ back that strength training! Really.. the worst that can happen is I decide that I “looked better” on my old plan and I revert back to that. What I’m striving for though is releasing myself from all “fears” left over from my old distorted body image days and to fully embrace myself.. and maybe some muscles too. So far..so good.
